Here are two new Zoom H2n recordings for you sample.

Sundilla is a long-standing folk music series in Auburn, Alabama. I’ve been their front-of-house sound man for several years. Their home is the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, which is primarily housed “in the former Ebenezer Baptist Church, a restored historic building, from the Auburn Historical Association. The church was built by freed slaves from hand-hewn lumber around 1870.”* The room is one of most pleasant acoustically in which it has been my pleasure to work.

Our headliner this particular evening was a group called Smithfield Fair. Three-part harmonies, guitar, acoustic bass, and accordion; a great workout for any recorder!

The first recording is cheating just a bit as it’s a straight board mix so it doesn’t really do much more than confirm it’s a nice recording option from other preamps. In this case the mixer is a Soundcraft EPM12, which uses the company’s lauded GB30 Mic amp. The difference between this mixer and the Mackie VLZ3 I had used for this series previously is remarkable. Soundcraft doesn’t offer the routing options Mackie does, but for a comparable number of overall channels and more mic channels, the Soundcraft sounds much better at a dramatically lower price.

Zoom H2n — Line In

I recorded using the Zoom H2n itself at the end of the night. The group performed a rousing number to end the night followed by a lovely version of “Auld Lang Syne” for which they invited the audience to join in. For both songs, I was holding the recorder mounted on the Rycote Portable Recorder Suspension at my mixer with most of the audience in front of me.

Zoom H2n — Internal MS Stereo

As before, these recordings are presented as 320kbps mp3.
